Epoxy Countertop Installation: Process, Cost & What to Expect

Most countertop replacements are messy before they look good. The old surface has to come out, cabinets may need protection or adjustment, and the kitchen can be hard to use for several days. Anyone who has replaced granite, quartz, or tile knows how quickly the job can become more disruptive than expected.

Epoxy countertops are different because the existing surface usually stays in place. Instead of tearing everything out, we prepare the countertop, repair what needs to be repaired, and build the epoxy system over it. For most residential jobs, that means no demolition, no structural changes, and a much shorter disruption window. A typical countertop installation takes three days on site.

What Makes Epoxy Countertops Different

The main difference is that epoxy is applied over the existing countertop instead of being installed as a new slab. That changes the whole job. There is less tear-out, the timeline is shorter, the cost is usually lower than stone, and the design can be customized far beyond standard slab colors. 

A customer in Davie had an outdated tile countertop. The grout lines were stained, the tiles had minor chipping at the edges, and every attempt to keep it looking clean required more effort than it was worth. We went over the tile with epoxy after grinding the surface, filling the grout lines, and applying a metallic coat. The finished countertop had a blue, flowing look that she described as looking like the ocean — without tearing out the old tile.

Epoxy Countertop Installation Cost

Professional epoxy countertop installation costs $50 to $150 per square foot installed. For a standard kitchen with approximately 35 square feet of countertop space, that’s $1,750 to $5,250 depending on the design complexity and condition of the existing surface.

What drives cost up: metallic or multi-color designs (more material, more technique, more time), going over existing tile (requires grinding and grout filling), complex edge profiles, and kitchen islands with exposed edges on multiple sides.

What keeps cost down: simple designs on clean laminate or concrete surfaces, straightforward edge treatment, and smaller square footage.

Compared to granite ($75–$185/sq ft installed) or premium quartz ($80–$200/sq ft installed), professional epoxy countertops are meaningfully less expensive while delivering a custom result that stone simply can’t offer. No two epoxy countertops come out exactly the same. For homeowners who want a one-of-a-kind surface, that is part of the appeal. For someone who wants a perfectly uniform slab look, epoxy may not be the right fit.

The Installation Process, Step by Step

Day 1: Preparation

The countertop is inspected, cleaned, and prepared. For laminate or concrete surfaces, this means thorough cleaning, light sanding to create surface profile, and any crack or chip repairs. Cabinets, appliances, and surrounding areas are masked and protected before any coating work begins. The goal is to keep the work area controlled and prevent epoxy from reaching anything outside the countertop. The base coat goes down at the end of Day 1 — thicker than a floor application to ensure full coverage and a solid foundation for the design layer.

Day 2: The Design Layer

This is the stage where the finished look starts to take shape. For a metallic epoxy design — the most popular choice for countertops — the metallic pigment is applied over the base coat and manipulated to create the flowing pattern. The installer controls the look: where the movement goes, how the colors blend, whether the result is dramatic or subtle.

This stage requires working time management — epoxy has a pot life and a working window during which manipulation is possible. After that window closes, the material sets and the design is locked in. This is why a skilled installer matters more on a countertop job than almost any other epoxy application.

Day 3: Topcoat and Edge Treatment

A polyaspartic clear topcoat seals the entire surface. This is what provides chemical resistance, scratch resistance, and UV stability. Edge treatment is also finalized on Day 3. The drip edge where the countertop meets the cabinet face is trimmed, cleaned, and finished so the front edge looks intentional instead of rough or heavy. 

Light use, such as placing objects back on the counter or doing light cleaning, is usually possible 24 hours after the topcoat. Full kitchen use resumes at 72 hours, including normal food prep, using trivets for hot items, and putting the space back into regular operation. In most cases, the kitchen is functional again by Day 4.

Does Epoxy Countertop Yellow?

Yes — standard epoxy is UV-reactive, which means it can amber or yellow when exposed to sunlight over time. This is a real concern for kitchen countertops near windows, and any honest contractor should address it before the job starts. 

The solution starts with the right topcoat and product selection. A polyaspartic topcoat significantly reduces UV exposure to the epoxy and helps delay yellowing. For countertops with strong window exposure, we discuss product selection, topcoat type, and in some cases window film during the estimate. It is not an unsolvable problem, but it does need to be discussed before the job starts.

What Epoxy Countertops Work Best With

  • Existing laminate countertops — usually a straightforward substrate when the surface is clean and stable
  • Tile countertops — requires grinding and grout filling, but can work very well
  • Concrete countertops — strong adhesion with the right preparation
  • Bathroom vanities — lower traffic than kitchens and usually a clean fit for epoxy
  • Bar tops and entertainment areas — good areas for more decorative finishes
  • Kitchen islands — exposed edges and larger surface areas make the finish more noticeable 

Care and Maintenance

Epoxy countertops are simple to maintain. There are no grout lines to scrub, no sealing schedule, and no special products required. For everyday cleaning, warm water and a mild, pH-neutral cleaner are enough. A few things still matter: 

  • Never cut directly on the surface — use a cutting board
  • Don’t place very hot pots directly on the epoxy — use trivets
  • Avoid bleach, ammonia, and solvent-based cleaners
  • Clean spills promptly, especially anything acidic (citrus, wine, vinegar)

Is it worth it compared to granite or quartz?

If you want a custom look, lower installation cost, and no demolition, yes. Epoxy does not match the raw heat resistance of stone, so trivets are still required. But it can create a one-of-a-kind surface that granite or quartz will not replicate. 

Do epoxy countertops chip or peel?

A properly installed system with correct surface prep does not peel. Chipping at edges can occur if the edge treatment is thin or if the surface takes a direct sharp impact — similar to tile edges. A quality installation with proper edge wrapping minimizes this risk significantly.
